Khmer New Year Festivities at TG International School

TG International School (TGIS) came alive as the school community gathered to mark the Khmer New Year in a joyful, meaningful way. The morning began with a vibrant showcase of traditional Khmer dances, including the Trot Dance, Robam Chai Yam and Robam Chun Por. The graceful movements, lively rhythms and beautiful costumes captivated the audience, offering a rich glimpse into Cambodia’s cultural heritage, and setting a festive tone for the day. 

 

Students honour their parents with a traditional ceremony of respect

A heartfelt and meaningful moment followed as the children participated in a traditional ceremony of respectby bowing and offering flowers to their parents. This tradition highlighted the values of gratitude, respect and family connection, creating an emotional and memorable experience for both children and their families. The activity was followed by a creative craft session, where students made wishing cards to express their love and appreciation.

The excitement continued as guest performers from the Cambodian Support Community Children’s Organisation took to the stage with a vibrant traditional dance, delighting the audience and showcasing rich cultural heritage. Laughter and cheers filled the air as families and children joined in a variety of traditional Khmer games, Sva Donderm Sleok Chher, Leak-Kon-Seng, Jumping Bag, Reav-Bong-Kong, Tug of War, Pull the Turtle and Catching the Kid. These games brought everyone together, encouraging teamwork, joy, and active participation across all ages. 

Winners of the best costume segment

Adding to the festive spirit, a Best Costume segment celebrated creativity and tradition, with participants dressed in stunning Khmer attire. The event was not only a celebration of culture, but also an opportunity to share Cambodia’s rich traditions with an international community. This left everyone with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of Khmer heritage.

The curriculum covers knowledge, skills and understanding in the three strands: Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening

This curriculum is for learners who have English as a first language and can be used in any cultural context. For learners who speak a language other than English at home, we supplement with additional support for the development of foundation skills for grasping the language.
